H5N1 Avian Flu: Infection Period - 1997 to 2006
Medical Treatment
Tamiflu or Relenza are the treatments used to shorten the length of flu infection. It is taken immediately upon discovering flu infection. Since there is an incubation period before most people realize they are sick, most can not take Tamiflu within the prescribed time period, rendering the drug ineffective. The U.S government has purchased 80 million doses, at $100 dose, of Tamiflu, from Tamiflu manufacturer Gildead Sciences Inc,
Gilead Sciences Inc, is the maker of Tamiflu, and is where Secretary Of State, Donald Rumsfeld sat on the board from1997 to 2001 , and still owns extensive amount of stock. Rumsfeld owned $5 million of the stock, when it was valued at $35 in April which has since jumped to $47. Former Secretary of State George Shultz, who is on Gilead's board, has sold more than $7 million worth of Gilead in 2005. This is no doubt the main reason the U.S bought $80 million in Tamiflu, with taxpayers dollars
That $80 million that should have been spent on flu shots for the 2006 or 2007 flu season to protect citizens from geting the flu, not treating them after they have it. The Bird Flu mortality rate is 50%. Tamiflu will not change that. The bird flu is thought to be heading west, and might arrive in the summer of 2006 when birds in the migrate back to Alaska on the East Asian Australian Flyway.
It could take another year of two, for the problem to sweep North America in the beginning phase of a pandemic. There is also the possibility with the Bird Flu moving west as of the winter of 2005, that it may arrive in Central Canada via Atlantic Flyway migration route, in the summer of 2006. That is only if the migrating birds bring the flu in 2006. Otherwise, it could be another year away, as the disease is not yet transmitting from human to human, the fastest way to spread the disease globally.
Other Medical Treatment
The only other treatment helpful to controlling the adverse affects of Bird Flu are fever reducing medications. The fever is the most severe affect, and is the most dangerous. You may also need to take medications to sooth and heal the throat, in order to keep it from becoming severe, and causing other complications. Seek medical attention immediately if you have any of the symptoms.
